Some older dogs, usually over 6 years of age can sometimes be prone to eye cataracts. There is another similar condition which can affect the dog’s eye also, known as nuclear sclerosis which causes a grayish colour of the eye lens.
A dog can have both nuclear sclerosis and an eye cataract at the same time, and it is for the owner of the dog to decide on whether the dog’s vision is being affected, in which case a cataract is suspect, since nuclear sclerosis does not affect vision.
A visit to a veterinary ophthalmologist will confirm if a cataract is present and dog eye cataract surgery may be recommended. But it should be understood by the pet dog owner that the cataract cloudiness is permanent and the only treatment is for cataract surgery.
